The immune system is known for preventing disease. It is the first line of defense against infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, pathogens) and toxins. Immune cells use the process of inflammation to help destroy invasive pathogens and toxins so recovery and regeneration processes can restore health. There is no argument that a healthy immune system is essential to resilience.
There is a theory of immunology in Ayurvedic tradition called “beejbhumi,” which translated from Sanskrit means “seed and land.” According to these teachings, the body is the land. Infections or “bugs” are the seeds. When your nutrition and lifestyle are not in harmony with your body type, the body fills up with Ama, metabolic toxic buildup. The accumulation of ama is extremely detrimental to our health and can lead to a variety of imbalances. At the same time, your Ojas (the immune supporting sap) is lowered. When these conditions are present infections will find the body to be fertile ground to grow and spread.
Everyone is more susceptible to illness when the seasons are changing, such as in the fall and early spring. This is because the body functions differently in each season. In the transition between the hot and cold seasons, the Agni, or digestive fire, can start to fluctuate dramatically. In fact, the strength of agni in the body is among the most critical factors in determining overall health. If you do not adjust your nutrition and routine accordingly and follow the Ayurvedic guidelines for seasonal transition you can build up Ama, which is a fertile ground for disease. Then, it is easy for a cold or the flu to sprout.
Ayurvedic medicine’s main emphasis is on disease prevention. By living in any environment, we are bound to be affected with its elements. To prevent disease and stay in balance, Ayurvedic medicine prescribes daily routines, seasonal routines, physical exercise, yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises), meditation, and nutrition to maintain our resilience.
Ayurvedic Herbs for Immune Support
Ayurvedic medicine has many rejuvenating herbs, traditionally known as rasayana, which improve health, immunity, vigor, vitality, and longevity, as well as protect against stress.
Rasayana herbs are specific adaptogens. These adaptogens can be general, organ specific, season specific, or age and sex specific. The beneficial actions of rasayana herbs have been scientifically proven through experimental as well as clinical studies. Rasayana herbs keep enzymes in the cells in their normal state of function. These cells are revitalized and their composition is changed. Tranquility of the mind is also promoted, which helps combat the process of aging.
Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha)
Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha) has been used for over 4,000 years in India and has long been celebrated for its ability to encourage quality energy throughout the day and sound sleep at night. More commonly known as “Indian ginseng” due to its stimulating effects, it has been used to calm the mind, relieve weakness and nervous exhaustion, build energy, promote healthy sleep, and improve overall health and longevity. In particular, the root of Ashwagandha is regarded as a tonic and aphrodisiac. It is one of the most highly regarded and widely-used Ayurvedic herbs and is believed to promote energy, support the activity of the immune system, provide brain support, and support thyroid function.
The key constituents of ashwagandha are called withanoloids, and they play an important role in the herb’s ability to promote physical and mental health. Ashwagandha is most effective during occasional stress, when you need a boost in cognitive and brain function, for immune system enhancement, and to maintain lipid and glucose levels already within the normal range. R∙U∙VED Ashwagandha is carefully extracted to preserve the full spectrum of alkaloids and ensure maximum potency. It can be used on a daily, long-term basis and is considered beneficial for all constitutional types.
Emblica officinalis (Amla or amalaki)
In Ayurveda, amla has traditionally been used as a rejuvenator (rasayana) and an adaptogen. This sour fruit is regarded as a natural antioxidant with a rich and high source of vitamin C, while also providing cooling, bowel supporting, heart protective, and immune supporting properties. Amla is said to help maintain vitality and youthfulness while supporting the proper function of the heart.
Amla Plus™ is a nutrient-rich tonic for the immune system based on an ancient Ayurvedic formula known as chavanprash. Chavanprash is a blend of 38 herbs and spices, including the antioxidant-rich amla fruit, used widely for immune support and as an adaptogen to promote resilience, longevity, and health. This ancient recipe is considered one of the world's finest immune enhancers, and is a natural source of vitamin C, bioflavonoids, and tannins. Amla Plus™ is a dosha balancer, a rasayana in Ayurveda, and is said to help maintain vitality and youthfulness. Because of its adaptogenic properties, Amla Plus™ offers year-round nutritional support for people of all ages (except children less than one year old) and is ideal for anyone looking for an easy, delicious way to support their health and immunity.
Flucomune™ is a proprietary herbal blend formulated to support immunity and detoxification. The herbs in this formula are both cleansing and nourishing to the immune system, offering antioxidant protection (AMLAOXY®), enhancing digestion and nutrient absorption (zingiber officinalis and Piper nigrum), supporting healthy inflammatory response (guduchi), and boosting liver function. This formula also has an adaptogenic effect, fortifying the body’s natural resilience and immune response through times of change and stress as well as seasonal weather change. Flucomune™ is a great staple for home use and traveling alike.

Supplements for Immune Support
Probiotic supplements offer several beneficial properties including supporting digestive and immune system health. In order to ensure this balance, probiotics and prebiotics are essential. Prebiotics serve as a fertilizer to make beneficial bacteria in the gut, while probiotics provide good bacteria to the gut. Did you know…roughly 80% of the body’s immune system is located in and around the digestive tract? Healthy probiotic populations promote proper distribution of immune cells in the digestive tract and promote a healthy response to inflammation. This means finding a daily probiotic supplement is important for overall health. Probiotic cultures are often manufactured through a fermentation process and then freeze-dried and blended with fructooligosaccharides (FOS), a prebiotic that has symbiotic effects with the bacterial strains. Most high quality probiotic supplements contain a variety of live strains including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium longum, and Streptococcus thermophilus to name a few.
What makes RUVED’s probiotic supplement unique is the human origins of the bacterial strains, which makes them not only well-suited to adapt to the human body, but also acid and bile resistant, so that they survive the stomach acid. Additionally, RUVED’s all natural probiotic supplements are available in a vegetarian capsule, free of common allergens, backed by scientific studies, and are third-party tested. These qualities make R·U·VED one of the best probiotic supplement brands on the market.
Fatty acids form important structural components of each nerve cells; fatty membranes also form the blood-brain-barrier that protects the brain and controls what goes in and out. Fish oil supports a positive mood, strengthens the immune system, supports cognitive function and memory, and supports healthy muscles and joints.
Other Natural Ways to Support Immune Function
- Choose a healthy diet. Eating a diet that is low in fat, cholesterol, simple carbohydrates (e.g., cakes, cookies, crackers, pasta, candy, sugary drinks), and salt, and increasing the number of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, probiotic foods, and fiber can help improve overall health, while decreasing the risk of chronic health conditions.
- Dark colored fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C and bioflavonoids that provide excellent immune support. In addition, fresh fruits and vegetables are a source of both prebiotics and probiotics. Fruits are best eaten in between meals for better digestion. Traditionally probiotics came from fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, naturally fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, and pickles are excellent natural probiotic foods.
- Avoid alcohol and smoking.
- Reduce stress. Over time, stress can negatively impact health. Excess stress can certainly compromise the immune system. Incorporating stress relieving activities such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing, and massage improves overall health, lowers the risk of heart disease, reduces inflammation, changes the body’s responses to stress, and allows for balanced immune function.
- Practice good bedtime habits. Ayurveda considers sleep just as important as diet in maintaining digestive health. Sleeping at the right time and for right length of time helps restore cycles of day-night hormones like melatonin and cortisol. These hormones represent basic control over the metabolic and restorative functions of the body.
- Develop a routine. The concept of a routine goes hand in hand with the body’s physiologic clock. By promoting a routine, we enable our bodies to live in sync at all times.
- Exercise. Having an exercise routine promotes regularity and enhancement of the immune system and promotes the regeneration of the immune system
